Blue Origin's New Glenn Explodes on Cape Canaveral Pad in Largest Failure of Bezos Rocket Program

No injuries in Thursday-night prelaunch test that destroyed the methane-fueled booster at Launch Complex 36, roughly 90 miles south of the Treasure Coast.

A Blue Origin New Glenn rocket exploded on its launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station around 9 p.m. Thursday, destroying the methane-fueled booster during a prelaunch engine test and dealing the heaviest setback to date for the rocket program founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

The blast occurred at Launch Complex 36 as engineers were counting down to a brief test firing of the New Glenn's seven BE-4 first-stage engines, according to reporting by Spaceflight Now. The static-fire was intended as the last major hurdle before a launch planned for as soon as June 4 carrying the first batch of Amazon's Project Kuiper "Leo" satellites — the first of 24 New Glenn launches contracted by Amazon. The satellites had not yet been transported to the pad.

"All personnel are accounted for and safe," Bezos said in a written statement, calling it a "very rough day" and pledging the company would "rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying." He added that the root cause of the failure was not yet known.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the test "was not within the scope of FAA licensed activities" and that there was "no impact to air traffic." An initial finding cited by industry trackers points to a cryogenic propellant leak that froze a hydraulic line, leading to a thrust anomaly that ruptured the vehicle, though Blue Origin and the FAA have not formally confirmed a cause.

The destruction of the vehicle is widely described as the worst failure in Blue Origin's history and one of the largest rocket explosions on U.S. soil. Launch Complex 36 is Blue Origin's only orbital launch facility. Damage to the pad — and the time required to repair it — will determine how long the company is grounded.

The explosion happened about 90 miles south of the Treasure Coast at the Brevard County spaceport that hosts most U.S. orbital launches. Locals frequently report seeing flashes and contrails from Cape Canaveral launches on clear nights; readers who saw or heard anything Thursday evening are encouraged to send a tip through the TC Sentinel newsroom.

For Blue Origin, the loss compounds pressure from a program already running behind schedule against SpaceX, whose Falcon and Starship rockets dominate the commercial launch market. The June Amazon Leo flight had been positioned as the company's coming-out lap on the heavy-lift side; rebuilding the booster and certifying the pad for return-to-flight will likely push the next attempt by months.
